Arnold Balch (February 8, 1775-October 10, 1848) was born in Mansfield, Tolland County, Connecticut (see map for location) to Israel and Sarah (Arnold) Balch.

Arnold married Meribah Leonard possibly some time around 1800 and they had seven children.

Shortly after being married Arnold and Meribah moved to Montrose, Pennsylvania where they briefly lived. During this time Montrose was still very wild and populated more by animals then people. One story says that Arnold and Meribah encountered a wild panther and had to run for their lives. Shortly after this incident they chose to move to Otsego County, New York where all but one child was born. Diana was the only child not born in Otsego County; she was born in Cortlandt County, New York.

Around the year 1825 Arnold, Meribah and family moved once again to Pennsylvania. This time the family settled at Rush, along the Wyalusing Creek, and remained there until the death of Arnold and Meribah.

Arnold made a living through cabinet and wheel-head making (wheel-heads are part of a spinning wheel used for making yarn). On October 10, 1848 Arnold died in Rush, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.
